November 22, 2024 | Women's Basketball
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Oregon State played with unimpeachable effort for 40 minutes of Friday's battle with no. 22 Illinois but third quarter shooting woes hurt the Beavers in a 85-66 defeat on the road.
Â
AJ Marotte led the Beavs with 16 points, adding four rebounds and assists. Catarina Fereirra put together her second-straight double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Â
Oregon State trailed 21-13 after the first quarter and 40-30 at half despite getting opportunities in the paint where baskets refused to fall. At one point, OSU trailed 17-6 before fighting its way back into the game at the period's end with Ally Schimel's first career three and a tough basket from Kennedie Shuler.
Â
Ferreira was a bright spot for the Beavers in the first half, securing her second career double-double in just the first half with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The senior hit a triple and got three the old-fashioned way, outracing Brynn Shroup-Hill to the rim before finishing through the contact.
Â
The Illini pulled away with a 29-14 third quarter as the Beavs got open looks but struggled to get the lid off the basket. OSU made 5-of-17 from the floor an 2-of-12 from three in the third. Shuler scored six of her eight points in the frame to try and keep the Beavers in it.
Â
Marotte and Sela Heide encouraged offensively in the fourth with the former scoring nine points an the latter getting seven in the frame. Susana Yepes and Cloe Vecina added three. The freshman got valuable experience running the point in the period.
Â
Oregon State takes on second-ranked UConn on Monday. The game is slated to tip at 4:30 p.m. PT on FloCollege.
