CORVALLIS, Ore. – Cal Baptist got an offensive rebound and a friendly roll with a second left to knock off Oregon State 79-77 in the season-opener for both teams on Wednesday evening.
Lauren Olsen scored the game-winner for CBU, the final points of a game-high 24 for last season's WAC Freshman of the Year. Taylor Young led the Beavers with 22 points, the most in a debut by a Beav since Alyssa Martin set the record in 2010.
Jenna Villa scored 21 points including 19 in the second half. She was inches away from 24 but the would-be game-winner with a second left rimmed out as time expired. Kennedie Shuler put together a strong all-around game with 10 points, seven assists, five rebounds, two blocks and one steal.
Lara Alonso-Basurto had seven points and grabbed 11 rebounds in her first start. Evelini Smith scored eight points on a 3-for-3 day from the floor with two and-ones.
Shuler keyed the opening moments of the game with five points in the first 10 minutes as the Beavs led 21-18. CBU responded in the second quarter, holding the Beavs to six and entering the break with a 31-27 lead.
The Lancers extended their lead as high as 13 in the third quarter but the Beavers responded to drag the score back within four. Villa and Young provided the key baskets, combining for 25 points in the frame and forcing CBU into a timeout.
A back-and-forth battle followed in the fourth quarter. OSU took the lead on a Villa layup at 67-66 and Ashley Uusitalo's first college basket was a massive three-pointer to extend the lead to four. The Lancers had a little more left though and took the lead at 78-77 with a floating layup that got a friendly roll after an offensive rebound extended the possession.
The Beavs shot 50 percent from the floor and 82 percent from the free throw line. CBU found their extra possessions to win the game on 15 offensive rebounds and 18 OSU turnovers.
