Reverse Sweep of San Francisco Secured
November 09, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
SAN FRANCISCO – A 6-0 run in the final set helped the Oregon State volleyball team finish a reverse-sweep of San Francisco on Saturday afternoon on the road.
Â
Held to sub-.100 hitting percentages in the opening two sets, the Beavers (8-15, 6-5 WCC) flipped the script in the third and fourth with clips north of .325 as they went on to win at 16-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-19, 15-12.
Â
A trio of Beavers – Annika Hester (19), Zaria Thornton (13) and Lauren Rumel (11) – led in kills while a pair – Emma Lilo (33) and Alara Doganyuz (22) had double-figures in assists to lead the attack. The defense was a team effort as well with four recording double-figures in digs with Yasemin Narlioglu (15), Lilo (12 – to cap a double-double), Vivian Light (11) and Alexis Rodriguez (10).
Â
After dropping the first two frames of the day, the Beavers held off a sweep with a match-high hitting percentage of .410, Hester's eight kills in the set, nine Lilo helpers, a pair of Light service aces and a combined 17 digs from eight different Beavers. Though they trailed for the majority of the set, San Francisco threatened late with a run to get them within five at 21-16. Oregon State used a final 4-1 surge to push the match to a fourth.
Â
Tallying another seven kills in the fourth, Hester's offense helped push the game to the distance as the Beavers won the set at a 25-19 line. Taking a lead at 3-2, the Beavers never trailed for the duration of the frame as they tallied a .325 clip. Oregon State led by as many as seven before the Dons closed it to as little as five before the set ended at the six-point margin. The Dons threatened with a 4-0 run to trim an eight-point margin to just four at 20-16 but was too little too late.
Â
Ready to keep the momentum going and finish out with a win, the Beavers rattled off a 6-1 run in the deciding set to take the match. Facing a two-point deficit, OSU took advantage of Don miscues to go up 11-8 and never trail again. Despite both sides trading 3-0 runs, four late kills by Hester sealed the reverse sweep as OSU secured the set win at 15-12.
Â
With the win, Oregon State secured the season sweep over the Dons after defeating them in five sets last month in Gill Coliseum.
Â
Oregon State will stay on the road for the next match when they'll take on Pacific. First serve from Stockton is set for 6 p.m. on November 13th.
