Renteria Picks Up First Ranked Win in Sunday Showdown
February 04, 2024 | Wrestling
TEMPE, Ariz. – Maximo Renteria registered his first win – a ranked win - by decision over the nation's 11th-best at 125 pounds but the Beavers fell in a road battle to 19th-ranked Arizona State by a 19-17 margin on Sunday afternoon.
Renteria – a newcomer this season – and Richard Figueroa battled for separation through two as they evenly split the bout's first eight points. After both registered a takedown in the final frame, Renteria's takedown and riding time point proved to be key in the win.
Cleveland Belton (141) added a technical fall in his return to Tempe with a 20-4 win over ASU's Cody Foote. After a 9-1 advantage in the first, he built a nine-point lead after two with a period left. He helped his cause with an escape-to-a-takedown to cruise to the 16-point win. The Californian clocked 2:35 of riding time to add a bonus point.
After the hosts took four consecutive bouts, Trey Munoz (184) brought the Beavers back into it as the former ASU transfer used a technical fall of his own to trim the deficit. Munoz registered four first period takedowns on the way to an early 12-4 lead. Three more were tacked on for an 18-6 lead before he ended the affair at 25-8 thanks a bonus point for clocking 2:14 of riding time.
Justin Rademacher (197) gave the Beavs the lead with a major decision in the penultimate bout of the day, as he defeated Jacob Meissner. Despite only using a single takedown and escape in the first two frames, he exploded for a 10-3 advantage in the third to push his way to the result.
With the dual's balance hanging on the heavyweight bout, Boone McDermott battled fourth-ranked Cohlton Schultz hard but couldn't counter the late takedown as the difference in the 5-2 decision.
Oregon State (5-5, 2-2 Pac-12) will cap nonconference action with a dual at Wyoming next Saturday, February 10th for their penultimate dual of the season. Action from Laramie is set for 5 p.m. PT and can be seen on FloWrestling.
