Early Goals Not Enough in Loss to SDSU
September 15, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State women's soccer played on Sunday, building up a multi-goal lead before falling, 3-2, to South Dakota State.
One day after her birthday, freshman Hayden Wilson got on the scoresheet for the first time as a Beaver with the game's opening goal. Off a corner kick, Wilson redirected a cross from Claire Jones into the back of the net, putting OSU ahead in the 24th minute.
Less than 10 minutes later, the combination of Katie Godden and Valerie Tobias proved fruitful as the Beavers doubled the lead. After breaking through a duo of Jackrabbit defenders, Godden played a perfectly weighted pass for a bolting Tobias, who poked it past a rapidly approaching SDSU 'keeper with the outside of her right foot.
With the two goals, Oregon State took a 2-0 lead in the games' 35th minute while signifying the first points of the season for all four players.
South Dakota State scored late in the first but OSU led, 2-1, after 45 minutes.
Godden found room for a shot from range in the 54th minute, but a diving save from SDSU's goalkeeper kept the game at 2-1.
The visitor counterpunches came in quick succession, scoring off a penalty kick in the 59th minute before taking the lead in the 61st.
McKenna Martinez nearly drew the game level in the 82nd minute, spinning around her defender inside the 18-yard box and creating a clear shooting lane, but her powerful shot was saved.
OSU finished the game with 13 shots, which included a season-high eight on goal. In net, Mya Sanchez made six saves as Godden (four), Megin Turi (two) and Carly Carraher (two) all finished with two or more shots.
Oregon State returns to action on Thursday, heading east to face Wyoming in the non-conference finale. Kickoff in Laramie is slated for 3 p.m. PT.
