September 17, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team saw their home opener spoiled by Washington on Tuesday night, falling in four sets (23-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-25) inside Gill Coliseum.
Held to just a .111 hitting percentage in the pivotal fourth set, the Beavers (1-7) could not push forward for a winner-take-all fifth.
Vivian Light (16), Lauren Rumel (13) and Zaria Thornton (10) led the Beavers' attack and were aided by a combined 41 assists from a duo of Emma Lilo (21) and Yasemin Narlioglu (20). Defensively, the Beavs were led by three in double-figure digs: Narlioglu (17), Light (13) and Rumel (10) to complete double-doubles
Oregon State withstood multiple Husky runs in the first set but couldn't close a late gap as the visitors struck first. Using a 5-2 run after deadlocked at 18, Washington put the Beavers in an uncomfortable spot at 23-20. Down but not out, Oregon State battled four Husky set points before falling at 25-23.
The Beavers leveled the affair with a three-point win in set two at 25-22 – all while holding the Huskies to a .195 clip. Light used four kills and Alara Doganyuz tallied nine helpers to push the Beaver attack in the frame. Never trailing in the set, the Beavers built a lead as high as nine but closed it off a Zaria Thornton and Kalli Schoening block for the final margin.
Eager to grab the lead, a 5-0 run by the Beavers was not enough to claim the third set. Finding themselves down 13-10, OSU stormed back for a 15-13 advantage bookended by kills from Thornton and Elly Schraeder. Following the media break, the visitors responded with a 5-0 run of their own on the way to taking the 2-1 set lead.
After the fourth set's first 10 points were alternated, the Huskies broke the set open with runs at 9-1 and a pair at 3-0 to take their third of the night. Washington's offense tallied a suffocating .407 clip to put pressure on Oregon State.
Oregon State's two-match home set concludes this Friday night, September 20th, against Portland State. Fans that won't be able to make it to Gill Coliseum can catch the action at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
