Straudi Opens 2024 Account in Road Win at Utah Valley
September 25, 2024 | Men's Soccer
OREM, Utah – Entering Wednesday's game as the team leader in assists, it would be Fabian Straudi who scored his first goal of the season in a 1-0 Oregon State victory over Utah Valley.
Assisted in the 74th minute by Enzo Newman and Pere Belmonte, it was a long-awaited breakthrough for the Beavers (4-2-2), who finished Wednesday's game with an 11-5 advantage in total shots, which included a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
John Nicolson made his sixth start of the season in net for Oregon State, making two saves as the team posted its first shutout of the 2024 campaign.
Though the game-winner came late, OSU nearly found a breakthrough less than five minutes after kickoff from the boot of Tomas Bedouret. After a deflected attempt, Bedouret teed up a one-time shot that forced the UVU 'keeper to make an acrobatic stop to his right, pushing it out for the team's second corner kick in the opening five minutes.
Late in the first half, an Enzo Newman cross was deflected off the woodwork and kept out, while Nicklas Lund had a great chance from inside the six-yard box that was saved in the 57th minute.
After Straudi's goal in the 74th, Oregon State's defense came up big and held the Wolverines without a shot on target, preserving the clean sheet.
The Beavers will be out on the road for their next game, heading to Northern California to face Santa Clara. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. on Saturday.
