Shuler Shines En Route to Maui Classic Title

MAKAWAO, Hawaii – Kennedie Shuler scored a career-high 21 points and earned Tournament MVP honors as Oregon State defeated Liberty 64-57 on Friday night at Seabury Hall to capture the Maui Classic Championship.

Shuler shot 8-of-14 from the floor and knocked down 4-of-5 free throws while adding six rebounds for the Beavers (8-5). Jenna Villa contributed 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting to go with two steals. Villa also earned All-Tournament recognition.

Oregon State shot 45 percent from the floor and connected on 7-of-18 three-pointers. The Beavs shot 85 percent from the free-throw line, converting 11-of-13 attempts in the victory.

The Beavers seized control in the third quarter, outscoring Liberty 20-17 to build a 45-42 advantage heading into the final period. Oregon State then shot 46 percent in the fourth quarter to pull away for the victory.

Ally Schimel added eight points for the Beavers, while Néné Sow contributed six points and grabbed six rebounds. Lara Alonso-Basurto and Lizzy Williamson had two blocks apiece.

The Beavers dished out 10 assists on 23 field goals and committed just nine turnovers a day after struggling with giveaways in a win over Montana State. OSU won on the fast break, outscoring the Flames 13-6 in transition points.

Emmy Stout led Liberty (6-5) with 14 points, while Avery Mills also scored 14 points and connected on 3-of-7 from three-point range.

The victory marked Oregon State's second-straight win and fifth in its last six games on Maui. The Beavs have time off for the holidays before returning to action Sunday, December 28 at San Francisco.
