Beavers Finish Fourth To Open Spring Season

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Oregon State women's golf team had a great start to its spring season, finishing in fourth place at the competitive 12-team San Diego State Classic on Tuesday.
The Beavers concluded the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a 14-over 290-293-295—878 at the par-72, 6,376-yard Heights Golf Club
Raya Nakao recorder her sixth career Top 10 finish, and second this season, finishing in eighth place with a 3-under 72-71-70—213. Nakao's two rounds in red figures increased her career total 19. She had 10 birdies over the three rounds and nothing worse than a bogey.
A sophomore from Kaneohe, Hawai'i, Nakao has been dominant in her two seasons as Beaver, as she set the Oregon State single-season scoring record last season (72.05) and has posted nine of her 15 rounds this season at par or better.
Senior Madde Sund, a native of Skollersta, Sweden, had her best finish since her sophomore campaign, finishing in 12th place with an even-par 72-71-73—216 that included a team-best 12 birdies. Sund's best career finish is a tie for seventh place at the 2023 NCAA Regionals in Westfield, Ind., when she carded a 6-under 68-71-71—210.
Junior Kyra Ly, from just up the road in Portland, also had a great spring opener, shooting a 6-over 72-76-74—222 to finish in a tie for 21st place. In five tournaments this season, she has four Top 25 finishes with the best being a tie for fifth place at the Molly Collegiate Invitational.
True freshman Clara Alevag from Gothenburg, Sweden, posted a 14-over 77-75-78—230 to finish in a tie for 43rd place. She had four birdies in Monday's afternoon play, her most in a round as a collegian.
Sophomore Kelly Hope, a Pretoria, South Africa native, shot a 2-over 74 in the first round and a 4-over 76 in the second round, but was DQ'd on the final day of competition.
finished in a tie for 34th place with an 11-over 74-76-77—227 that was highlighted by a birdie in each of the three rounds. This was the sixth collegiate tournament for Hope and her second best three-round score and finish (t-30th, 6-over 222, Leadership and Golf Invitational).
No. Stanford dominated the course, and the field, shooting a 31-under 833 to win by 32 strokes over second-place UNLV (1-over 865). Meja Örtengren of Stanford claimed medalist honors with a 15-under 201, which was eight strokes better than her teammate Paula Martin Sampedro, who finished second with a 7-under 209.
The Beavers will next return to competition on Monday, Feb. 24 and Tuesday, Feb. 25 at The Causeway Invitational in Sacramento, Calif.
