March 20, 2025 | Wrestling
PHILADELPHIA – Ethan Stiles – making his NCAA Championships debut – used a 2-0 mark and punched his ticket to the quarterfinals, highlighting Oregon State's first day at the NCAAs in Philadelphia on Thursday.
Stiles (149) registered one of the day's biggest upsets – an 8-0 major decision win over fourth-seeded Kyle Parco – on his way to a 2-0 mark following a 6-4 win over no. 21 Willie McDougald of Oklahoma at decision to open the tournament. Tied against Parco up until the :45 mark of the second, Stiles was dominant in the final 2:15. Leading 5-0 late, he sealed the upset with one last takedown of the defending All-American to advance.
Trey Munoz (197) split his results on the day, a wire-to-wire win over 20th-seeded Camden McDanel of Nebraska, 4-2 at decision but fell short in sudden victory to fourth-seeded Josh Barr of Penn State, 5-2. The win over McDanel was the second of the season for the two-time All-American following a victory in November's Navy Classic.
Maximo Renteria (125) lost a closely-contested opener to Indiana's Jacob Moran, 7-6, at decision. Renteria battled back from a 7-2 deficit in the late stages of the third but couldn't complete the comeback. In the consolation round against Pac-12 foe, Richard Castro-Sandoval of CSU Bakersfield, he bounced back with a 7-2 win at decision to stay alive and keep battling on Friday.
Nash Singleton – seeded 32nd at 141 – started with a dominant major decision win over Columbia's Lorenzo Frezza (8-0) to advance out of the preliminary round to the championship bracket. In his ensuing bout, he fell to top-ranked Brock Hardy of Nebraska at major decision in the championship bracket. In the consolation bracket, Singleton staved off elimination with a 2-1 win via tiebreak over Campbell's Shannon Hanna.
TJ McDonnell (184) split his pair of bouts on the day: falling in his debut but staying alive with a win in the preliminary round. He dropped a hard-fought opener by decision and turned it around in his next one. With his tournament life on the line, he made a statement with a win by technical fall.
CJ Hamblin (157) fought hard in his bouts but saw his tournament run end following a pair of defeats.
The remaining Beavers will continue action in the NCAAs tomorrow with day two from the Wells Fargo Center. Action is set in the quarterfinals and consolation rounds at 9 a.m. PT and then the semifinals and consolations at 5 p.m. PT. ESPNU and ESPN+ will carry coverage in the morning (PT) session while ESPN2 and ESPN+ will show the nightcap.
