Volleyball Drops 3-1 Match At Washington

SEATTLE - Sarah Bjeldanes hit .317 with 19 kills, but no other Beavers hit above .200 as the Oregon State volleyball team fell to Washington in four games Friday evening. Game scores were 15-9, 12-15, 15-4 and 15-7.
The Beavers (8-10, 2-8) had just 54 kills and hit .120 for the match, while the Huskies (7-11, 3-7) hit .278 with 73 kills. UW's Kristina Laffling had 25 kills and hit .405, while Lisa Underhill added 16 kills and eight blocks.
Washington strung together five straight points to break away from a 5-5 tie in game one. The Huskies capitalized on OSU's mistakes in the first game, when the Beavers hit .000 (13-13-38). UW scored nine of its points off OSU hitting errors.
The Beaver offense made a complete turnaround in the second game, when OSU hit .310 with 17 kills and just four errors. Bjeldanes hit .583 with seven kills to lead the OSU attack in the game two victory.
But OSU's offensive woes returned in game three, as the Beavers managed just six kills to go along with seven errors for a -.036 mark.
OSU's troubles continued in game for as Washington built up a 10-2 lead. Then OSU setter Brandi Bonnarens went down with an injury with the score at 12-4, sending freshman Megan Mosness onto the court for the first time in her collegiate career. Underhill slammed down a kill to make it 13-4, but the Beavers fought to keep the match going.
There were 13 sideouts before OSU made it 13-5 when Mosness recorded her first career kill. In between several more sideouts, the Beavers scored a couple more points off UW hitting errors, but the Huskies finally put it away on an OSU error and then a dump from setter Britni Churnside.
Bjeldanes recorded her sixth double-double of the year as she posted a team-high 11 digs to go along with her 19 kills. Gina Schmidt also had 11 digs, and Angie Shirley recorded 12 kills and eight blocks on the night.
The Beavers return to action Saturday, October 23 when they take on Washington State in Pullman at 7 p.m.
