CORVALLIS - The Oregon State volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of California on Friday, extending the Beavers' longest losing streak of the season to five matches. Game scores were 15-10, 15-9 and 15-8.
But, the Beavers (8-12, 2-10) were playing with a mostly inexperienced lineup. OSU was without setter Brandi Bonnarens, who is out indefinitely with a knee injury, and Sarah Bjeldanes, who quit the team earlier this week. Bjeldanes was the only senior on the team and was leading OSU in kills.
"We had four freshmen, a sophomore and a junior out there for most of the match. We lost a lot of experience on the floor (without Bonnarens and Bjeldanes)," said coach Nancy Somera. "We'll look at this as an opportunity for some of the younger kids to get some playing time and work on improving their game."
Angie Shirley led the OSU offense with eight kills, marking the second match in a row that no Beavers had double-figure kills. Shirley also tallied six blocks, moving her into sixth place on the OSU career blocks list at 338. She also tied her career-high with eight digs.
Gina Schmidt posted a team-best 16 digs, for her seventh double-digit defensive performance this season. She had five kills and two blocks as well.
OSU's freshman combined for 17 of the team's 35 kills. Joscelyn Hannaford had six kills, Michele Solomon had four, and Katrina Nelson and Nikki Neuburger had three apiece. Megan Mosness, who had a career-high 29 assists, also had one kill. Nelson, who hit .333 on the night, had all three of her kills in the final game - the only game she played.
Brook Coulter, Leah Young and Kellie Alva each had nine kills to lead Cal (10-11, 5-7), and Coulter also turned in a match-high 18 digs.
Neither team generated much offense, with many of the points being scored on errors. Cal had 26 errors and hit .159 on the night, while the Beavers committed 24 errors and turned in a mere .085 hitting percentage.
The Beavers outblocked Cal, 9-8, but the Golden Bears had the edge in kills (48-35), digs (60-52) and aces (5-3).
OSU hosts No. 2 Stanford at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 30.
