NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Shawna Feldt went 5-for-7 in a doubleheader against Cal State-Northridge, but the No. 11 Oregon State softball team could not come up with a win in its season opener Saturday afternoon. The Beavers lost the first game, 7-2, and the second game ended in a 4-4 tie when it was called on account of darkness in the seventh inning.
"We did a lot good things, but it definitely showed that it was our first time out on the dirt," said coach Kirk Walker. "It's not a bad starting spot and unfortunately it is a loss and a tie, but it was good to get outside and play some ball."
Feldt went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the opener, and she was 2-for-4 with two runs in the second game. Michelle Notaro also went 3-for-3 in the first game, while rookies Shelly Prochaska and Steph Adams each had two hits in the nightcap. Adams also had a solo home run in the opener.
"Shawna Feldt had a career day. She looked outstanding both offensively and defensively," Walker said. "We also saw a lot of good things from our freshmen."
The Beavers (0-1-1) actually outhit Northridge (1-0-1) in the first game, but the Matadors had five of their six hits in the fourth inning, when they scored seven runs and left the bases loaded. OSU had a chance to cut into the lead in the sixth inning when the Beavers had three hits but failed to score.
"The first game was a very long game, and we played very well except for one inning. They scored seven runs in one inning, and it wasn't necessarily on hard hit balls but a lot of bloop singles," Walker said. "We did an OK job hitting the ball. We outhit them in the first game, but we couldn't get the runners across the plate. But by far we outplayed them, other than the one inning we couldn't get an out."
In game two, OSU led, 4-3, heading into the bottom of the seventh. Meaghan Finnerty led off the Matadors' half of the inning with a single and then advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt and a fly ball. Then Ui Bal reached first and Finnerty scored the tying run on a fly ball that was dropped by OSU centerfielder Parisa Plant.
Plant was charged with an error on the dropped ball, although the game was called due to darkness following that play.
"It was disappointing to end up with a tie. We were leading the whole game and went out and scored right away," Walker said. "It would have been nice to get the win, but a dropped fly ball in center field in with two outs in the seventh allowed them to score the tying run. It was partly due to darkness, but it happened so unfortunately we have to take the tie."
