FULLERTON, Calif. - - Oregon State's softball team defeated UNLV(13-11) 3-0 in extra innings Thursday afternoon at the KIA Klassic tournament to improve their record to 19-5-1. The win gave head coach Kirk Walker his 150th career victory heading into Friday's contest against DePaul.
Crystal Draper pitched her seventh complete game of the year, striking out nine and allowing only five hits as she earned her eighth win of the year to remain undefeated at 8-0. Draper came into the game with a 2.09 earned run average in 63.2 innings of work, while holding opposing batters to a .207 average.
"Crystal threw a phenomenal ballgame," said Walker. "Every time they put pressure on her she stepped up her game and shut down their offense."
No. 12 Oregon State had managed only three hits of their own through the first eight scoreless innings, but came to life in the top of the ninth. With Brynnen Guthrie placed on second base, as per extra-inning rules, Michelle Chariton drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one out for batter Jenni Jodoin. The junior first baseman then smacked a RBI double to score Guthrie and put OSU in the lead for good. Catcher Shelly Prochaska then came up big, singling in Jodoin and Chariton for the final score of 3-0. The win avenged a 1-0 loss earlier in the season to UNLV, and improved OSU's all-time record against the Rebels to 2-9.
"Jenni Jodoin and Shelly Prochaska really came through offensively in the last inning to pick up the winning runs," said Walker.
Prochaska went 2-for-4, Brooke Rutschman and Tarrah Beyster each singled, and Jodoin rounded out the hitting for OSU with her double.
"We played really good defense, but struggled all day offensively," Walker said.
Nicole Traux pitched the entire game for UNLV, but took the loss after surrendering only five hits and striking out six.
