EUGENE, Ore. - - The Oregon State women's softball team managed to sneak two runs across the plate to earn a hard-fought 2-0 victory in Tuesday afternoon's Civil War Pacific-10 showdown in Eugene against the No. 22 University of Oregon.
No. 12 OSU's Tarrah Beyster and Oregon's Connie McMurren engaged in a pitching duel all afternoon long, with the Beavers' two runs coming in the second inning.
With one out in the Beavers' (27-12-1 overall, 1-6 Pac-10) half of the second, Jenni Jodoin and Steph Adams drew walks with one out to put runners on first and second for catcher Traci Feldt. Feldt then smacked a pitch back to the mound, but McMurren threw wildly to second base in an effort to start the double play. The throw reached centerfield, allowing Jodoin to score, Adams to take third, and Feldt to reach second. One out later, sophomore Michelle Chariton singled in Adams to for a score of 2-0 and what proved to be the last hit of the game for OSU.
"I was disappointed overall with our offensive output, but we'll take it," said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. "We were trying to work the count with a plan, and we're doing a better job of it. We got a couple of hits when we needed them."
Beyster never allowed Oregon's offense to get going. The Ducks (24-17, 1-6) strung together a pair of singles in the fourth to break up Beyster's no-hit bid, but Beyster got the out to end the Duck threat. Beyster allowed only three hits while striking out 10 UO batters before a crowd of 394.
"Tarrah pitched a great game," Walker said. "She shut down a tremendous Oregon offense."
"I felt really good going into the game, and I have a lot of confidence in our defense," Beyster said.
The two teams will meet in a Civil War double-header rematch on Apr. 22, with the first game slated to begin at 12:00 p.m. at Oregon State's Ropes-Fetrow Field. The Beavers will play next at St. Mary's on Thursday, Apr. 13 in a double-header at 2:00 p.m.
