NORMAN, Okla. - Brynnen Guthrie doubled in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Oregon State softball team to a 1-0 win over Northwestern on the opening day of the NCAA regional tournament Thursday.
Parisa Plant led off the 10th with a single, her only hit of the game. Shawna Feldt laid down a sacrifice bunt, which NU pitcher Lauren Schwendimann bobbled, putting runners at first and second with no outs. Guthrie then came up to the plate and hit her eighth double of the year to send Plant home with the winning run.
"Walking up to the plate, I knew it would be a hit. I knew that I just had to go out there and do it, and I knew that my team was behind me," Guthrie said.
The Beavers (38-19-1) had opportunities to score early in the game, but couldn't come up with hits at the right time. Feldt had three hits in her first three at-bats, but was stranded every time. OSU left two runners on in the first, third and eighth innings.
Feldt's three hits were the only for OSU in regulation. Shelly Prochaska singled in the ninth before Plant and Guthrie came up with two hits in the 10th.
"We had good opportunities to score, we just couldn't get the ball to drop. The game turned out to be a pitchers' duel," Walker said. "I knew that if we could just keep them off the bases that it would just be a matter of time before we scored."
Tarrah Beyster threw a five-hitter and struck out five batters to improve to 26-12 on the year. It was her second consecutive extra-inning shutout.
Northwestern left a runner on base in each of the first four innings, but the Wildcats (28-25) didn't have many chances late in the game. Beyster retired the first three batters in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. Gretchen Barnes singled in the 10th, but Rane Gunderson fouled out to third base to end the inning.
Schwendimann dropped to 19-11 with the loss. She gave up six hits and four walks while striking out six Beavers.
OSU will face No. 3 seed Arkansas at 5:30 p.m. PDT on Friday, May 19. Arkansas defeated CS-Northridge, 5-0, in Thursday's first round. Northwestern will play the winner of the No. 1 Oklahoma/No. 6 Harvard game, the final contest in Thursday's action. CSUN will face the loser of the game between OU and Harvard.
