Angie Shirley posted a match-high 18 kills to lift the Oregon State volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over Brown at the V.I.C.E. Script Connecticut Invitational on Friday evening. Game scores were 15-7, 15-8 and 15-6.
Shirley hit .517 for the match to lead the Beavers (9-2) to a .364 hitting percentage for the night. OSU finished the night with 61 kills, with Gina Schmidt also posting double-figures at 15. Brown (5-2) hit .266 with 44 kills.
However, the team was limited to just 22 digs for the match - its lowest defensive output of the year. OSU was averaging 16.97 digs per game entering the match.
"We didn't play very well, but I'll never complain about a 3-0 victory," said coach Nancy Somera. "I will say that 3-0 victories are supposed to leave a team feeling good, but no one on this team feels good about how we played tonight. We were uninspired on defense, which is not acceptable on this team."
After jumping out to a 5-2 lead in game one, the Beavers saw their lead fade away as the Bears came back to tie the game. OSU then went on a 9-0 run to take a 14-5, but the Beavers could not capitalize on game point opportunities. OSU had two hitting errors and a service error on its first three tries to win the game, and the Bears then scored a couple points of their own before Schmidt and Joscelyn Hannaford slammed down back-to-back kills for the win.
There were 15 sideouts before either team scored in game two. Schmidt and Michele Solomon combined for consecutive kills to put OSU on the scoreboard first, but Brown fought back. With the game tied, 3-3, Schmidt got a kill for a sideout and OSU scored five straight points - including two off aces from Schmidt. Again, the Bears stayed in the game and cut OSU's 10-3 lead down to 11-8 before a block from Solomon and Hannaford gave the Beavers another sideout. OSU rattled off four points - two from Shirley's kills - to take the game.
OSU looked to have control in game three after jumping out to a 7-0 lead but lost some of its momentum late in the game. Brown got back into the game by capitalizing on some Beaver errors, but OSU finally closed it out when Shirley got a kill for a sideout with OSU leading, 13-6. Lori Daedelow served her second ace of the match and Schmidt picked up kill No. 15 to end the contest.
The Beavers continue play at the tournament with an 8 a.m. PDT (11 a.m. EDT) match against Fairfield on Saturday. OSU also plays host Connecticut at 4:30 p.m. PDT (7:30 p.m. EDT) Saturday.
"We'll come back tomorrow and do it better," Somera said. "Against those two opponents, we'll need to."
