FULLERTON, Calif. - -
Oregon State freshman Brianne McGowan pitched a one-hitter while Kelly Petersen powered the No. 25 Beavers with two doubles in a 4-0 non-conference softball win over California-Santa Barbara on Friday afternoon at the Cal State-Fullerton Worth Tournament.
OSU takes on Michigan State at 6 p.m. this evening.
The Beavers (16-6) used a two-run fifth inning to open up a 1-0 game, putting together four hits, including RBI doubles from Vanessa Iapala and Sherina Galvan. Petersen and Carrie Syphers scored.
Owning a 1-0 lead after a RBI double from Petersen in the first, OSU had a chance to blow the game open in the second inning after loading the bases, but settled for a scoreless frame when Mia Longfellow lined out to centerfield to end the inning.
Freshman Natalie Johnson scored an unearned insurance run in the sixth to make it 4-0 after a bases-loaded walk by UCSB pitcher Lindsey Sommer.
McGowan, from Reno, Nev., was one pitch away from a perfect game, as she allowed the lone UCSB baserunner in the third inning - a harmless single down the leftfield line. She struck out three and walked none to improve to 4-1 on the year.
Petersen, Galvan and Lisa Allen led the Beaver attack with two hits apiece. Petersen was 2-for-2 on the day with a RBI, a stolen base and a run scored, but her string of three games with a homerun came to an end.
Only two of OSU's runs were earned, as the Gauchos (12-12) committed four errors.
