CORVALLIS, Ore. - Sophomore catcher Lisa Allen belted her ninth home run of the season, but it wasn't enough as No. 16 Oregon State dropped a 7-2 decision to Arizona State University in Sunday's Pacific-10 Conference softball action.
Poor fielding proved costly for the Beavers (37-17; 3-9 Pac-10) from the start as ASU (31-23; 1-9 Pac-10) took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning when Kristin Farber crossed the plate with an unearned run.
The Sun Devils added six more runs in the second inning, including a grand slam home run over the right field fence by Val Sevilla.
Allen's second inning lead-off home run to center field narrowed the ASU lead to 7-1.
The Beavers threatened with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth inning, but stranded a pair of runners on base.
OSU added its only other run when Vanessa Iapala ripped a double off the top of the right field fence to open the sixth inning and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Kelly Petersen, making the final margin 7-2.
"Obviously the game meant more to Arizona State - they're playing for postseason," said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. "Our pitching and defense created a deficit for us that was too big to overcome."
Beaver reliever Monica Hoffman struck out 10 batters in six innings of work - her fifth double figure strikeout performance of the season. Hoffman moves into second place all-time at Oregon State with 698 K's in her career, surpassing All-American Tarrah Beyster's (1997-00) total of 694.
Sophomore Alana Mendoza went 2-for-4 from the plate, while Sherina Galvan was 1-for-2.
Sevilla led Arizona State with a 2-for-3 mark and four RBI. Ashley Werschky picked up the complete game victory.
Oregon State hosts Saint Mary's College in a non-conference tilt on Monday at 1 p.m.
