Men's Soccer Falls To No. 10 California In Double Overtime

BERKELEY, Calif. - The Oregon State men's soccer team fell to No. 10 California, 2-1, in double overtime Friday afternoon on Goldman Field at Edwards Stadium.
"It was a hell of a game," Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons said. "I thought we came very prepared and put ourselves in every chance to win this ballgame or at least get a tie. If we play like this and play how we are supposed to play, we'll get these wins and get these points."
The Beavers (6-7-0, 1-5-0 Pac-10) evened the score in the second half on a header goal by senior Travis Sanchez on a cross pass from sophomore Roberto Farfan. Oregon State outshot the Golden Bears 5-0 in the first overtime with two of those shots on goal.
"We had our chances in overtime," Simmons said. "I'm very disappointed for the guys because they deserve more than this. It's hard to put that kind of performance together when you're on a string of a lot of disappointing matches. If we keep playing at this level, we will be fine and get ours."
California (10-2-3, 6-1-1 Pac-10) got the game-winning goal at 104:28 when Steve Birnbaum won a header and redirected a pass to Davis Paul who chipped the shot just past junior goalkeeper Steve Spangler. Birnbaum got the first goal for the Golden Bears at 33:04 on assists from Servando Carrasco and Paul.
"The way we are looking at it is that we feel the two goals against us were certainly in our control," Simmons said. "Their first goal was on a restart and we just had a lapse and it was certainly a lapse we can handle. We weren't able to clear the ball properly on the second goal. There's nothing about this game that we couldn't answer."
The Golden Bears entered the match ranked No. 10 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, No. 11 by College Soccer News and Soccer Times and No. 11 by Soccer America.
The Beavers return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Stanford at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
