SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Camille Saxton notched 16 kills and surpassed 1,000 for her career but the Oregon State volleyball team dropped a four-set decision to Utah Friday night at Crimson Court. Set scores were 20-25, 12-25, 25-19 and 18-25.
"This was a tough loss," Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. "We didn't play well in the first two sets before set three. In set four, we were tied at 17 and made a couple errors and couldn't get back in it before Utah won.
"We played both Tayla (Woods) and Megan (McBride) starting in set three and that worked well. Sara Almen also had a very good match in sets three and four."
Saxton became the 13th player in Oregon State (13-10 overall, 3-8 Pac-12 Conference) history with 1,000 or more kills and stands at 1,006 in three-plus seasons with the Beavers. She finished Friday night's match with 45 attempts, five digs, three blocks and an assist in the loss.
Becky Defoe, meanwhile, stepped into fifth place in a season at OSU for digs with 429; she had 13 against the Utes and picked up seven assists.
McBride tallied her fourth double double of the season, picking up a season-best 10 kills to go along with 13 assists. Almen, meanwhile, picked up eight kills and five digs.
The Beavers managed to get their offense on track only in the third set, when hitting .428. That helped lead to the 25-19 victory. Otherwise, the Beavers, who combined to hit .139 overall, were unable to get past .182 in any other set. Utah, meanwhile, hit .328 and was paced by Erin Redd's 12 kills.
The teams matched each other at the net, with both collecting nine blocks. Arica Nassar led the Beavers with six while Bailey Bateman paced the Utes (12-12, 3-8) with seven.
Defoe's 13 digs led OSU, which was narrowly out-dug by the Utes, 46-41.
The Beavers dropped the first set, 25-20, as Utah hit .448 in the frame. Oregon State hit .182 and held a lead at 9-8 but could not pull to within better than two points throughout the rest of the set.
The Utes out-hit OSU, .308 to negative .125, in set two, and never trailed in winning 25-12. The Beavers managed to tie the score three times in the deciding set four, but never managed to lead and lost, 25-18.
Oregon State completes its trip Sunday when the Beavers visit Colorado in Boulder. The match is slated for a 12 p.m. PT start (1 p.m. in Colorado) and it can be seen live on Pac-12 Oregon.
