CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State volleyball defeated Utah State on Saturday, winning in five sets at Gill Coliseum. With the result, the Beavers move to 11-8 on the year and 6-2 in Pac-12 play.
Â
AC Froehlich dominated, tallying 25 kills on a .286 clip to go with six digs and one block. The offensive output came within two of her career high – set earlier this season against Washington State – and extended her streak of 10-plus kill performances out to 10 matches.
Â
Jackie Matias recorded 50-plus assists for the fourth time this season, totaling 53 to go with 17 digs, two aces and a block. She now has six double-doubles on the year and increased her Pac-12 leading assist-per-set average to 10.26.
Â
Alana Marrs hit .545 on her way to 13 kills and three blocks with Taylor Treahy amassing 13 kills, eight digs and four blocks. Cheyenne Green had 10 kills, Taray Tela chipped in nine kills and eight blocks, and Isabel Bertelsen produced 13 digs, seven assists and two aces.
Â
The Beavers finished with 70 kills on 166 attempts, good for a .289 hitting percentage, while holding a 6-5 advantage in total service aces.
Â
Utah State controlled the early portion of the first set, building out a 13-8 lead, but as has been the case all season long, the Beavers responded immediately, scoring four-straight in a run that was capped off by a Froehlich kill before leveling at 14 on a Bertelsen ace. After OSU took the lead at 20-19 on an Aggie service error, Utah State rallied to regain control and fended off the Beavers to take set one in extra points, 28-26.
Â
Oregon State started fast and drew an Aggie timeout early in the second after a Marrs kill made it 6-2, carrying that momentum into a lead as big as 11. Treahy was crucial during a 7-0 run to build that lead, contributing a pair of kills and one block across just six rallies as Oregon State responded to its loss in the first with a 25-14 set two victory.
Â
Two Tela kills fueled a 4-0 run to break things open early in the third, helping the Beavers a to 10-7 advantage. Though both teams traded scores over the next several rallies, Utah State scored six unanswered down the stretch to win set three 25-20.
Â
Both teams traded blows early in the fourth, but OSU took control with six points in seven rallies to build out an 11-6 lead. Using a pair of 3-0 runs in the middle portion of the set that were capped off by a Green kill to make it 21-14, Oregon State won the fourth, 25-19.
Â
It was all Marrs all the time in the final frame, as the sophomore middle blocker finished with five of her kills in just the fifth set. OSU jumped out to 6-1 lead that quickly grew to 9-2, but the Aggies didn't go down lightly and brought the match within three points at 12-9, but the Beavers responded once more to take the set and match with a 15-10 win.
Â
Oregon State volleyball remains home for its next two, hosting Gonzaga (Oct. 29, 6 p.m.) and Colorado State (Oct. 31, 12 p.m.).
