STANFORD, Calif. - Becky Defoe totaled 21 digs to highlight the Oregon State volleyball's team day in a three-set loss (19-25, 14-25, 14-25) to No. 7 Stanford Sunday at Maples Pavilion.
Defoe had 12 of her 21 digs in the first set and paced the Beavers for the 16th time this season. The Pac-12 Conference's leader in digs, she now has 351 on the year and 1,278 for her career. She needs 26 to break into a tie for third in school history.
"We really ran into a buzzsaw," Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. "Stanford played really well. They dug everything. We played better; we served and passed the ball well. But they just dug the ball really well.
"I think we out-served and out-passed them but we lost the battle defensively. They out-blocked us and played better defense and kept the ball in play a lot."
The Beavers (12-6 overall, 2-4 Pac-12) were unable to break out offensively against the Cardinal (14-2, 6-0), hitting .041 as a team. Oregon State was led by Camille Saxton's seven digs. It's just the second time this season the Beavers failed to have a player in double-figure kills.
The Cardinal, meanwhile, was led offensively by Inky Ajanaku's 10 digs. Stanford hit .303 for the match.
Stanford also out-blocked the Beavers, 9-3. Haley Clarke led Oregon State with two, including one solo.
The Cardinal took the first set, 25-19, after the Beavers battled back from a 21-14 advantage. Oregon State, however, was unable to get closer and finished the first set with a .055 hitting percentage, led by Laura Schaudt's three kills. Stanford, meanwhile, hit .188.
Stanford went up 2-0 in the match with a 25-14 set two victory. The Beavers led early, 8-7, but the Cardinal went ahead for good with a four-point run. OSU upped its hitting percentage to .125 but so did Stanford, improving to .457.
Oregon State also led early in set three, 6-5, but Stanford pushed ahead for an 11-7 advantage and won the third set by 11 points again, 25-14. The Beavers hit minus-.059 while Stanford posted a .308 percentage.
The Beavers return to Gill Coliseum Friday night for a 7 p.m. PT match against Washington. The match is Oregon State's annual Spike Out Cancer event. Fans will receive pink foam noodles when entering Gill Coliseum.
