CORVALLIS, Ore. - Camille Saxton had 10 kills and Becky Defoe tallied 19 digs but the Oregon State volleyball team lost to No. 2 Washington in three sets (15-25, 22-25, 14-25) in front of a season-best crowd of 2,312 Friday night at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers and Huskies battled on the night Oregon State held its annual "SpikeOut Cancer" event. The more than 2,000 fans in attendance helped support the search for the cure for breast cancer. The Beavers were decked out in pink uniform tops while all in attendance had the opportunity to purchase pink t-shirts, where a portion of the proceeds went to the Corvallis Clinic's Project H.E.R.
"It was a great crowd tonight," Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. "We're getting great support from our students, which is great to see. We certainly hope people come out for Sunday."
Saxton had 10 kills for the Beavers, who posted a .096 hitting percentage overall. The Huskies, meanwhile, were led by Krista Vansant, who had 20 kills. Washington hit .275 for the night.
The Huskies also out-blocked Oregon State, 11-3, with Amanda Gil finishing with a match-best seven, all assisted. Haley Clarke had two to lead Oregon State.
Defoe's 19 digs paced the Beavers (12-7 overall, 2-5 Pac-12 Conference), who claimed 58 on the night, matching Washington's total. Defoe has 1,297 for her career and needs seven to tie Shelly Smith (1991-94) for third-most at Oregon State.
"We needed to play the entire match like we did in the second half of that second set," Liskevych said, alluding to the Beavers' near comeback. "The urgency, the digging, the attacking the ball was very different late in that second set than it was in the third. You can't let a team like that get on runs."
Washington (16-0, 7-0) took advantage of the match with a 25-15 set-one win. The Huskies hit .257 compared to Oregon State's .146 clip. Vansant had eight kills to lead UW while Saxton's five paced the Beavers.
Oregon State nearly overcame big Washington leads in set two but the Huskies took the frame, 25-22. Oregon State found itself down 18-10 but pulled to within four, 18-14, and later two, 22-20, but UW scored three of the set's last five points for the win. Vansant paced Washington with six kills and Ashley Eneliko had four for OSU, which again hit .146.
Washington finished off the match by posting a 25-14 win in set three. The Beavers finished with a .000 hitting percentage, led by Saxton's three kills, while Vansant again had six to lead Washington, which hit .351.
The Beavers continue play this weekend when hosting Washington State Sunday at 2 p.m. PT. The match can be seen live on the Pac-12 Networks in the state of Oregon with live stats available on osubeavers.com.
