BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 14 Oregon State gymnastics team defeated No. 20 California in a dual meet Sunday afternoon 196.050-194.700. Senior Makayla Stambaugh secured the all-around win with a score of 39.225 while Kelsi Blalock, Brittany Harris and Melanie Jones each nabbed individual titles.
“I'm really proud of how this team competed today,” head coach Tanya Chaplin said. “It was a tough meet and every tenth of a point we got was hard-earned. This is another solid road score and it is important that with a short week of practice this week that we continue to gather momentum.”
Oregon State record improved to 6-5, while California falls to 6-3.
The Beavers opened the meet on the uneven bars hitting all routines. Stambaugh and Harris led the Orange and Black with scores of 9.875 and 9.825 respectively as the Beavers took an early 48.950-48.825 lead.
In the second rotation, OSU continued its string of strong performances. Kelsi Blalock (9.90) and Hailey Gaspar (9.875). The duo finished first and second in the meet.
With a lead of nearly a full point 98.025-97.275, OSU moved to the floor exercise where it has mostly found consistency in 2013. Cerise Witherby tallied a career-best 9.775 to lead off and Tang followed with a career-high 9.70. Blalock scored a team-high 9.825 to earn a second-place finish.
Having extended the lead to more than a point, the Beavers moved to the beam. A lead-off fall put pressure on the rest of the lineup, but Stambaugh proved up to the task scoring 9.80 to correct the course. All five counting beam scores were 9.80 or better including matching 9.85's by Brittany Harris and Melanie Jones.
The Beavers' road show concludes next Friday, Feb. 9, in Tempe, Ariz. where they'll take on Arizona State in a dual at Wells Fargo Arena. The meet is scheduled for a 7 p.m. MT start. OSU will return to the familiar surroundings of Gill Coliseum the following week to host the UCLA Bruins, Saturday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.
