CORVALLIS, Ore. - Matt Boyd allowed two hits and struck out six last week against then-No. 20 Arizona to earn Pac-12 Conference Pitcher of the Week honors.
On Friday, the lefty was even better, limiting No. 20 Arizona State to one hit in a 5-0 win over Arizona State at Goss Stadium. Dylan Davis drove in two and Michael Conforto paced OSU with three hits in the series-opening win.
Boyd allowed a single to Drew Stankiewicz to open the game, but proceeded to retire the next 12 batters before walking Jake Peevyhouse to open the fifth. Boyd, however, then got Trevor Allen to ground into a 4-6-3 double play.
He ended the game with a career-high 11 strikeouts, with five coming in the last three innings.
The senior ended the game with two walks allowed and did not allow a runner to get past second. He improved to 5-0 on the year - tying teammate Andrew Moore for the most wins in the Pac-12 - and is 16-1 lifetime at Oregon State.
Boyd became the first pitcher to one-hit Arizona State (12-6-1 overall, 1-3 Pac-12) since Alabama's Alan Dunn and Tim Meacham combined to do so on June 10, 1983.
"Matt obviously threw very well and helped set the tone for this series," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "We had a good offensive night and fed off Matt's performance on the mound."
The Beavers (20-1, 4-0) opened the game's scoring when Davis singled home Ryan Barnes in the first. Jake Rodriguez added to OSU's lead in the second when he doubled home Kavin Keyes.
Danny Hayes reached on an error in the third for a 3-0 lead and OSU extended it to 4-0 on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Davis in the fifth. Continuing the trend of one-run innings, Andy Peterson executed a safety squeeze in the sixth for the 5-0 lead.
The Beavers finished the game with nine hits off four Arizona State pitchers, with Rodriguez and Keyes totaling two apiece.
Trevor Williams started and went five innings for the Sun Devils. He dropped to 3-2 on the year after allowing seven hits and four runs.
