Pair of Second Place Finishes Highlight First Day of Clemson Invite for OSU Women's Crew

Oregon State earns two second place finishes along with a third and fourth on first day of Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. – Led by two second place finishes by its second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ boats, the Oregon State women's rowing team wrapped up competition on Day No. 1 of the 2013 Clemson Invite in South Carolina.
The Beavers began race action Saturday morning, on Lake Hartwell with a third place finish in the third heat of the Varsity 8+ race behind Cornell and Duke. OSU's boat finished with a 6:37.6 time and was comprised of Simone Oberholzer (C), Anna Taylor (8), Karly Laney (7), Alexa Ortiz (6), Jessica Stewart (5), Agne Pack (4), Beth Lewis (3), Hilary Polis (2) and Saasha Bruce (1).
The second Varsity 8+ boat would improve upon the 1st Varsity 8+'s performance, with a second place finish in the third heat, with a time of 6:47.9. The only boat faster in that event's heat was Cornell's at 6:40.8. Aboard the boat for that event was Lin Hill (C), Chen Oshri (8), Bayly Camp (7), Nicole Hook (6), Ellen Pesek (5), Ashley Molholm (4), Kayla Laney (3), Tina Vernazza (2) and Julie Stark in bow.
A second straight runner-up performance would follow for head coach Emily Ford's squad, with a 7:34.5 time in the third heat of the Varsity 4+. Hailey Page (C), Hailey Hedlund (4), Leslie Greer (3), Laura McNeill (2), and Alissa Kummer (1), finished behind Penn, who crossed the finish line at 7:34.0
The final event of the morning for OSU was the Novice 8+, where the 'Beavs finished in fourth place of the third heat, with a time of 7:16.9. Rowing for coxswain Sadie Boyle was Taylor Pierce in stroke, Ceili Smythe (7), Gabrielle Maxwell (6), Marie Crim (5), Tarah Erickson (4), Breanna Burns (3), Samantha Anderlie (2) and Dana Parker in bow.
During the afternoon's finals session, OSU saw a pair of fifth place finishes in the Varsity 4+ (7:25.2) and Novice 8+ (7:02.0) as well as two sixth place finishes in the Varsity 8+ (6:26.4) and the 2nd Varsity 8+ (6:35.0).
The Beavers will get back on the water Sunday morning in South Carolina as they will race in heats of the Varsity 8+, 2nd Varsity 8+, Novice 8+ and Varsity 4+ against schools, Texas, Ohio State, Central Florida, UCLA and Minnesota.
