LAKE NATOMA, Calif. – The Oregon State women's rowing team finished seventh at the Pac-12 Championships on Sunday morning.
“It's hard to see on paper but this is a positive step for the program,” head coach Emily Ford said. “We feel good about today. The Pac-12 is on fire with five of the top 10 crews in the nation. But to see that we are closing the gap in the conference and that our varsity boat is the fastest we've had is the true indicator of the improvement we've made this season.”
With four fourth-place finishes, the Beavers garnered 6.5 total points while California defended its conference team title for the second year in a row at the Sacramento State Aquatics Center on the windy waters of Lake Natoma. Six crews from the Pac-12 entered the day ranked in the latest CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll including: No. 1 USC, No. 2 California, No. 4 Washington, No. 7 UCLA, No. 10 Stanford and No. 17 Washington State.
Racing against five crews ranked among the top 10 in the nation, including the top-ranked and undefeated crew from USC, the Beavers responded well to rowing in the lane with the roughest conditions but finished seventh in a time of 7:01.3.
Two OSU crews (the Second Varsity Eight and the Varsity Four) showed considerable improvement from a year ago. The 2V8, coxed by Lin Hill, shaved 10-seconds off the margin of finish from 2012 finishing 7:03.7, while the V4+, coxed by Hailey Page, finished in a time of 7:41.9 cutting five seconds off of last year's performance.
OSU's Novice Eight finished less than four seconds behind sixth place Stanford in a time of 7:18.0.
