
Beavers Finish Third at Athens Regional

ATHENS, Ga. – Junior Kaytianna McMillan returned to the vault lineup and performed in the all-around competition for the first time in 2016 but it wasn't enough for the 13th-ranked Oregon State gymnastics team as the Beavers finished third at the NCAA Athens Regional. Fellow junior Madeline Gardiner led the Beavers, scoring 39.275 in the all-around, and senior Risa Perez scored 9.900 on the balance beam to tie for the regional title sending both gymnasts to NCAA Championships as individual qualifiers.
“This team did its job this afternoon,” head coach Tanya Chaplin said. “We've fought adversity all season and this group of women just kept working and plugging away. I wish we'd had a different result, but I couldn't ask more of them as a group.”
Oregon State opened the meet on the floor exercise posting a team score of 49.000 to sit just .025 behind Georgia. McMillan score 9.875 from the anchor spot to lead the way, while senior Jamie Radermacher performed a fantastic routine to tally 9.850 and Gardiner added a 9.825.
On the vault, in the second stanza, the Beavers used a solid vault set to score 48.900. McMillan, vaulting for the first time since regionals last year when she suffered a knee injury, once again had the team-high mark of 9.825. Gardiner and fellow junior Megan Jimenez each scored a 9.80.
Following a bye, OSU returned to the competition floor for their uneven bars rotation. Shireen Khamedoost tied her season-high of 9.850 in the second spot in the lineup to lead the Beavers. McMillan and Mary Jacobsen added marks of 9.800 as the Beavers scored 48.975 on the apparatus.
OSU moved to the balance beam to wrap up the meet. Perez registered her 9.900 to tie for the regional title qualifying to NCAA Championships as an individual. Gardiner scored a 9.875 from the anchor position and Silvia Colussi-Pelaez scored 9.850 to help the Beavers to an overall score of 49.000.
Oregon State finished the meet on a bye.
Gardiner and Perez will compete at the NCAA Championships April 15 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Following the meet, Oregon State Deputy Athletics Director, Marianne Vydra was honored with the West Region Administrator of the Year award by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W).
