Beavers Drop Game One After Sun Devils Use Long Ball
March 25, 2017 | Softball
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Oregon State softball team dropped its first Pac-12 road game of the season and game one of the series against No. 21/24 Arizona State, after the Sun Devils hit four home runs to defeat the Beavers 8-0 in six innings.
The Sun Devils scored in every inning, except the first frame when Taylor Cotton struck out two batters. ASU hit a pair of two-run home runs in the third and fourth innings, before adding insurance runs off solo homers in the fifth inning. The Devils finished the game on a walk off fielder's choice in the sixth after a leadoff double and single put the winning run on base and into scoring position.
The Beavers put runners on in the first three innings but left them there and struggled to get another baserunner on the rest of the game.
Oregon State generated four hits in the first three frames, highlighted by Jessica Garcia hitting a triple to right field and Alysha Everett knocking a double to right center.
Taylor Cotton made her 13th start and picked up the loss after throwing 3 1/3 innings before being relieved by Meehra Nelson. Nelson pitched 1 2/3 inning before Nerissa Eason came in in the last inning and faced three batters. Cotton recorded four strikeouts, while the staff walked three batters collectively.
Oregon State (15-12, 0-4 Pac-12) will continue the series at Arizona State tomorrow night under the lights starting at 7 p.m.
