Merwin Blasts First Career Home Run in Loss to BYU
March 31, 2017 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Freshman Stephanie Merwin recorded her first home run of her career with a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring the Oregon State softball team within two runs with No. 25 BYU, but fell 4-2 on Friday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex.
The Beavers started the scoring in the first frame after forcing the Cougars down in order to start the game. Alysha Everett singled down the left-field line with the bases loaded to score McKenna Arriola from third.
BYU came back with two runs in the second inning to take a small lead. The Cougars kept the Beavers offense at bay down the stretch and added to their lead in the sixth to lead 4-1 with two frames left.
Oregon State earned one run back in the seventh after Stephanie Merwin lead off with a solo homerun to left. Alyssa Pelegrin walked as a pinch hitter to put a runner on with two outs, but the Beavs could not tie things up.
Nerissa Eason recorded the loss after starting and pitching 6 1/3 innings before Meehra Nelson came in as relief. The pair combined for three strikeouts and five hits.
The Beavers generated six hits, highlighted by Stephanie Merwin and Shelby Weeks who both tallied a RBI.
Oregon State (16-13, 1-5 Pac-12) will continue its bye week tomorrow hosting two games against BYU and UNLV starting at noon.
