
Nelson Throws Shutout Against Portland State

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Meehra Nelson hurled a complete-game shutout and struck out eight batters to help the Oregon State softball team defeat Portland State, 9-0 in five innings Tuesday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex. The game was the first for the home-and-home series with the Vikings. The Beavers and Vikings will rematch on May 3 in Portland.
The Beavers started the home half of the first inning with a pair of singles and loaded the bases with one out after Natalie Hampton was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch and throwing error by the Vikings in the next at bat allowed McKenna Arriola to score to but the Beavs on the board first. Two batters later, Lovie Lopez hit a single through the right side to score another run. Stephanie Merwin followed with three-run homer – her second of the season – to left-center to give the Beavers an early 5-0 lead.
The Oregon State defense was on lock down giving up just one hit for the rest of the game. The Beavers added to their lead in the fourth, after Alysha Everett hit a sac fly to center with bases loaded to score Jessica Garcia. Oregon State again loaded the bases for Sammi Noland who hit a 2-RBI single, to make the score 8-0. The Beavers scored an insurance run later in the inning off a wild pitch.
Meehra Nelson finished the game putting the Vikings down in order in the fifth, including using two strikeouts.
Oregon State recorded eight different batters with a base hit, including Stephanie Merwin who had three RBIs.
Meehra Nelson was solid in the circle throwing her first shutout of the season and striking out eight batters.
Oregon State returns to Pac-12 action Friday afternoon hosting Stanford, at 3:05p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks.
