Beavers Snuff Stanford Comeback
April 22, 2017 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State softball team recorded a 4-3 win in game two to win the series against Stanford for the fourth-straight season on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinal threatened with a pair of runners on base and two outs in the top of the sixth, but the Beavers snuffed any comeback.
Both teams went down in order to start the game, but the Cardinal struck in the second frame after a double to left field allowed a run to score. A great throw from Jessica Garcia and a relay from McKenna Arriola to home prevented further damage in the inning.
Â
The Beavers responded in the home half of the inning after Lovie Lopez hit a sac fly to left to score Natalie Hampton who walked earlier in the inning to tie the game 1-1.
Â
Oregon State forced Stanford down in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings before breaking the tie in the bottom of the fifth. The inning was keyed with back-to-back walks to start before McKenna Arriola hit her second homer of the season to left to give the Beavers a 4-1 lead.
Â
The Cardinal would not give up easy as it responded in the sixth with a solo home run to cut into the Beaver lead. Back-to-back singles allowed runners to get on a base before a single scored another run with two outs. A barehanded grab by Nerissa Eason in the circle and throw to first snuffed any further damage.
Â
Oregon State would load the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth, but fail to increase its lead.
Â
Stanford put a runner on base in the final inning after a walk, but back-to-back strikeouts by Eason and a fielder's choice ended the game.
