Beavers Knock off Fresno State
September 02, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon State's volleyball team continued its hot start to the 2017 season with a three-set victory over Fresno State at the North Harbour Marriott Invitational hosted by the University of Portland at the Chiles Center.
Â
The Beavers moved to 5-0, for the first time since 2014, topping the Bulldogs (3-3) by scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-22.
Â
"I'm pretty happy with how we played today, certainly better than last night," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We really sustained our play today other than the beginning of the third set."
Â
Oregon State set the tone early jumping to a 7-0 lead in the first set behind a pair of kills and a block by Haylie Bennett. The Beavers controlled the rest of the set to take the opening stanza 25-15.
Â
The Beavers continued to press the action in the second set holding a lead throughout until scoring five of the last six points of the game to close it out 25-18.
Â
Following the intermission, the Bulldogs came out rejuvenated taking a 6-3 lead forcing OSU into a timeout. Fresno State held its lead through the midpoint of the set until OSU retook the lead at 16-15. It remained a close affair until the Beavers stretched the lead to 24-20. Oregon State eventually took the set 25-22 to earn the victory.
Â
"We still have a few areas we can work on, but I thought we did well against their main hitters."
Â
Game Notes: Oregon State improved its all-time record in the series with Fresno State to 11-6 … Haylie Bennett recorded a career-best 13 kills for the Beavers and tied Mary-Kate Marshall for the team-lead. It is the first time this season someone other than Marshall has led the team in kills … Marshall registered her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs.
Â
Next Up: The Beavers take on Portland at 6 p.m. at UP's Chiles Center. The match will be televised on CSN Northwest.
