Oregon State drops 9-3 decision to Tennessee
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The No. RV/RV Oregon State University softball program fell behind early to No. 11/11 Tennessee on Friday at the Big League Dreams Park, and couldn't overcome the deficit en route to a 9-3 loss on the second day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
"Not our best game," said head coach Laura Berg. "I wish we had hit the ball better and wish we had played better but we just didn't play as well all the way around. The bats didn't show up, the pitching didn't show up and the defense didn't show up.
"There were some bright spots, but it wasn't enough."
The Lady Vols (14-1) struck first in the top half of the opening frame after the first two runners got aboard before Meghan Gregg cleared the bases with her three-run blast to right center. Junior Meehra Nelson (Simi Valley, Calif.) (6-2) retired the next three batters in order to end the at bat.
The Beavers (9-5) cut into the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the stanza when junior Jessica Garcia (Hughson, Calif.) stole second and reached third on a throwing error by catcher Abby Lockman, allowing senior McKenna Arriola (West Hills, Calif.) to score.
Garcia ended up crossing the plate following a single through the right side from freshman Missy Nunes (Livermore, Calif.), while Gabby Sprang kept the damage to a minimum after inducing a ground ball out to end the inning.
Both sides settled into a pitcher's duel of sorts through the next three innings before Tennessee added six more runs between the fifth and sixth innings behind a myriad of batted balls and eventually chased Nelson out of the circle in the fifth inning for sophomore Nerissa Eason (Grass Valley, Calif.).
Oregon State's best chance to add to its total came in the fifth after Garcia, senior Alysha Everett (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) and freshman Hope Brandner (Vacaville, Calif.) teamed up to load the bases with nobody out, but a timely pitching change from the Lady Vols ended the threat before it started as Matty Moss entered the circle and promptly struck one Beaver out before she induced a ground ball double play.
Moss would go on to take her second save of the year, securing the win for Caylan Arnold (5-0), but not before Arriola smacked her first home run of the year in the final inning to center field to set the final line score at 9-3.
The Beavers will face off with No. 6/12 Auburn for the third day of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. PT. The contest will broadcast live on FloSoftball.com.
