Beavers End Mary Nutter on High Note with Win over Blackbirds

Mazon spins first career CGSO in 4-0 win over LIU Brooklyn
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Freshman Mariah Mazon (Tulare, Calif.) toed the pitcher's plate for the No. RV/RV Oregon State University softball program on Sunday at the Big League Dreams Park and spun a one-hit, complete game shutout to cap the 2018 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 4-0 win over LIU Brooklyn.
"It was a good day," said head coach Laura Berg. "We needed to get that one under our belt and have a win heading back to Corvallis. We have some work we need to do when we get back home.
"I'm proud of Mariah (Mazon) and Nerissa (Eason); they're playing with heavy hearts. They dug deep and they're here for their team."
Mazon went the distance and fanned four Blackbirds (3-11) with the only hit coming as a bloop single to left field in the top of the sixth. The Tulare, Calif., native retired the first 10 batters she faced before Patricia Griffin reached on an error in the top of the fourth.
Overall, Mazon retired six of the seven leadoff batters and recorded 15 outs in 16 at bats through the first five innings of work.
On the offensive end, Oregon State (10-6) got nine hits and opened the scoring in the bottom of the second after freshman Camryn Ybarra (Mission Viejo, Calif.) pushed an opposite-field liner to left to plate classmate Missy Nunes (Livermore, Calif.).
Nunes was originally thrown out at home, but an obstruction on catcher Victoria Zamora granted the Beavers a 1-0 lead heading into the top of the third.
Mazon helped her own cause in the bottom of the third after coming in to hit with two aboard and her grounder through the left side capped senior McKenna Arriola (West Hills, Calif.) and freshman Chance Burden (Huntington Beach, Calif.) to give OSU a three-run cushion going into the fourth.
A pinch-hit single from freshman Sara Lillie (Murrieta, Calif.) that plated junior Jessica Garcia (Hughson, Calif.) in the bottom of the fifth put a bow on Oregon State's run total for the morning. Garcia ended up at third following her seventh career triple that sailed over the outstretched glove of the right fielder.
Mazon worked herself out of a two-on, one-out jam in the sixth after Angie Vazquez drew a walk before Kiana Cisneros broke up the no-hitter to open the frame.
The duo advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Katie Hinkle to ramp up the pressure, but a fly ball to Burden wasn't deep enough to bring a run home, while Nunes gloved a hot shot liner to end the threat.
The Beavers will have a few days off before returning to the diamond on Friday, March 2, to open up the San Diego Classic, hosted by the University of San Diego, with a doubleheader against No. RV/RV Colorado State and No. 22/22 Minnesota.
