Beavers Fall in 15 Innings to No. 7 Arizona State; Mazon Throws OSU Record
April 08, 2018 | Softball
CORVALLIS – Mariah Mazon pitched an Oregon State record 15.0 innings, but the Oregon State softball team dropped a 15-inning game and series to No. 7 Arizona State 2-1 inside OSU Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Oregon State falls to 21-17 overall and 4-8 in Pac-12 action. Meanwhile, Arizona State improves to 33-5 overall and 7-2 in conference play.
Today's game set an Oregon State record for the longest game, surpassing the previous record of 13 innings set in 2016. Mazon set an OSU record for most innings pitched throwing 15.0 complete innings. She broke the record previously held by Karen Schoonover who tossed 13.0 innings against San Francisco in 1985.
It was a pitchers dual aided by great defense from both teams in the rubber match for the series. Both pitchers combined for 26 strikeouts and 12 scoreless innings.
The Sun Devils grabbed its first lead of the game in the third inning behind a single and an RBI double to right field.
Scoreless frames in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings followed with a big defensive stop for the Beavers in the top of the seventh inning. ASU had the bases loaded looking to add to its lead, but Mazon stood tough in the circle logging her ninth strikeout of the game.
The bottom of the seventh followed with Oregon State getting down to two outs before a short rain delay was called. The Beavers loaded the bases before the rain hit. Following the short delay, Alyssa Pelegrin in her first at bat of the season hit an RBI single to left field scoring the game-tying run.
Mayu Molina attempted to score from second, but was tagged out on the throw to home plate.
In extra innings both defenses held tough keeping the game tied at 1-1. The Beavers had their best chance at ending the game in the bottom half of the 13th inning. OSU managed to load the bases with only one out, but left all three stranded.
Arizona State scored the game-winning run in the 15th behind a leadoff double and a sacrifice fly.
Jessica Garcia led the way offensively with three hits. Mazon pitched 15.0 innings giving up two earned runs while striking out 11.
