Beavers stifled by Utes, 52-7
October 12, 2019 | Football
Oregon State trailed the entire contest as they struggled all night to find an answer to Utah's offensive attack. A rough start put the Beavers in a big hole in which they would fight to climb out of for the rest of the game.
Utah jumped out of the gate with a purpose as they quickly scored on their first two drives of the game and then capped off a dominant first quarter with another trip into the end zone to lead 21-0. The Utes used 257 yards in one quarter alone to take control of the contest as Oregon State struggled to find momentum on both sides of the ball.
After forcing Utah to their first punt of the game with less than eight minutes to go in the second quarter, the Beavers looked in business by driving down to Utah's own 31 yard line before senior quarterback Jake Luton was picked off for the first time this year after throwing 181 passes without an interception, a statistic that had placed him second nationally behind Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa.
The Beavers showed promise as they would out gain Utah 110 to 48 in the second quarter but that wasn't enough to string together a comeback. Another Utah touchdown before the break put the Beavers into an even bigger hole as the Utes went into the locker room up 35-0.
The Utes would extend their lead to 52-0 in the second half before the Beavers made their way into the end zone for their lone score of the game with 56 seconds left in the contest. Sophomore quarterback Tristan Gebbia connected with sophomore running back Calvin Tyler Jr. on a 15-yard pass to break into the scoring column for Oregon State.
Luton finished 17-of-34 for 131 yards while backup quarterback Tristan Gebbia finished 5-of-8 for 138 yards and a touchdown. Luton connected with junior receiver Isaiah Hodgins for 77 yards on eight catches which moved the junior up to 10th in the record books with 1,860 career yards receiving.
The Beaver defense was led by senior defensive back Jalen Moore with a season-high 11 tackles and two solo stops. Senior Shemar Smith added seven tackles with a solo stop of his own
