November 29, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
EUGENE, Ore. – Maddie Goings tallied 19 kills and Grace Massey registered 30 digs but the Beavers fell to Oregon in four sets in the second edition of the Civil War brought to you by PacificSource Health Plans, Spirit Mountain Casino, Safeway-Albertsons, your local Toyota Dealers and First Interstate Bank. Friday's match concludes the season for both teams.
With the loss, Oregon State drops to 9-22 overall and 3-17 in Pac-12 play, while Oregon's record improved to 9-20, 5-15. Set scores were 25-23, 23-25, 20-25 and 15-25.
"We got off to a good start, but in the end (Oregon) got going well," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We played significantly better than (at Utah) on Wednesday."
"Maddie Goings really played well and just finished the season very well and it was good to see Haylie Bennett got back to playing well have being off for a couple matches."
Trailing by three early in the first set, OSU went on a 5-0 run fueled by a pair of Goings kills and a block by Serena Bruin to go ahead 7-5. In a game of short runs, the Beavers used a 4-1 spurt again powered by a trio of Goings kills to tie the score at 13. The score remained tied at 18-18 when shortly after the Beavers did it again scoring five out of six as Lindsey Schell notched a kill then a block to take the lead at 23-21. The Ducks tied the score at 23-23 before back-to-back kills by Bennett and Goings put away the opening set for the Beavers, 25-23.
The second set was close early. Amy Underdown helped push a 4-1 burst with two kills giving the Beavers a lead at 10-8. Oregon pushed out to a 18-14 lead and OSU hung around but still trailed by four at 24-20. OSU staved off three set points closing to 24-23 until UO finally put away the final point taking the set, 25-23, and tying the match at the intermission.
The Beavers rushed to an early 9-5 lead in the third as Goings and Bruin each provided three kills apiece during the flurry. However, an 8-1 response by the Ducks resulted in a 13-10 Oregon lead. OSU closed the gap to one four times including as late as 21-20. But Oregon answered each time holding on 25-20.
The fourth set was tied at 6-6 before Oregon attempted to move out on a three-point run. But the Beavers responded with four out of five points as Underdown put the ball on the floor twice during the run to tie the score at 11. Oregon gained the momentum from there taking the set, 25-15, and the match.
