Hammoude Hits Grand Slam, Beavers Fall to No. 11 Arizona

CORVALLIS – Freshman Frankie Hammoude hit her first career grand slam in the bottom of the third inning, but the Beavers still fell to No. 11/10 Arizona, 11-4.
Seniors Shelby Weeks and Michelle Sass added three hits between the two of them in the game. Weeks' hit came in the bottom of the first when she led off with a single. Sass singled in the bottom of the second to advance a runner to second before both were stranded to end the inning.
In the third, Ashton Phillips reached on an error by the second baseman, Weeks walked and Missy Nunes was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Hammoude. Hammoude wasted no time and smoked the first pitch she was thrown over the left field fence.
Sass went on the recorded her second hit in the sixth with a double that narrowly missed clearing the center field fence. Sass finished the day going 2-for-3.
Arizona put up four runs in the first and second innings to jump out to an early 8-0. The Wildcats added one more run in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Senior Meehra Nelson started in the circle for the Beavers and recorded two strike outs before sophomore Mariah Mazon finished the game. Mazon recorded eight strikeouts in six innings.

Oregon State will finish the series against Arizona tomorrow 12 p.m. at the OSU Softball Complex.
