Last-second Stanford FG downs Beavers, 31-28
September 28, 2019 | Football
A slow start for the Beavers on both ends of the ball proved costly as Stanford racked up two touchdowns in the first half to go up 14-0 at the break. Another Cardinal touchdown in the third quarter gave Stanford a three-score lead before momentum shifted in Oregon State's favor in the second half.Â
Â
With the Beavers playing catch up for most of the first half, junior Isaiah Hodgins kick-started an offensive rhythm with Oregon State's first scoring drive starting and ending with the receiver. Hodgins had to maneuver his body when sixth-year quarterback Jake Luton found him for the Beavers first touchdown of the game. Hodgins had to ultimately tip the football to himself for the hard-earned touchdown which pulled the Beavers within two scores with 1:21 left before the break. Hodgins was outstanding once again as he finished the contest with another consistent performance on 10 catches for 162 yards.Â
Â
The second half was a different story for the Beaver offense as a strong rushing attack by senior Artavis Pierce came to life. Pierce took off for a 43-yard touchdown run with 12:23 left in the fourth quarter which made things interesting for the time being. Â From that point, the Beavers put together scoring drives on their next three possessions. Stanford picked up another touchdown to go up 28-14 with under 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when Oregon State responded.Â
Â
Sophomore running back B.J. Baylor ran in for a 1-yard touchdown with 7:05 remaining to pull the Beavers within a touchdown. Shortly after, the Beaver faithful exploded when a back-and-forth second half became knotted up, 28-28, with 2:34 remaining. A much-needed scoring drive gave Pierce his second touchdown of the game.
However, the next Stanford drive would spell doom for Oregon State as a 43-yard kickoff return by junior receiver Conor Weddington proved to be enough to move the chains and set up a game-winning drive. Stanford would then march into Oregon State territory and use a final-second 39-yard field goal by Jet Toner.Â
Â
Pierce moved up the Oregon State record books as the senior rushed for 141 yards and two touchdowns. Luton finished the night with 337 yards on 27-of-39 passing while Isaiah Hodgins was his biggest target with 10 catches for 162 yards.Â
The Beaver defense was led by junior Hamilcar Rashed Jr. with eight tackles and two sacks on the night. A contingent of four Beavers picked up five tackles each.
