Mazon Walkoff, Beavers Split Action on Final Day in Hawaii

Honolulu, Hawaii. – Junior Mariah Mazon hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the sixth inning against Nevada to help OSU split action on the final day of the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament.
OSU fell to Seattle U, 6-1, in the first game of the day before run-ruling Nevada, 9-0 in six innings to conclude weekend action.
Vs. Nevada
The bats came to life for the Beavers in the third inning of the Nevada game beginning at the bottom of the lineup. Freshman Ivana Perez and junior Chance Burden drew back-to-back walks. With two on and no outs Missy Nunes singled into left field to advance the runners. Due to an error by Nevada's left fielder, Perez is waived home to score and Burden makes it to third.
With runners on the corners and no outs, freshman Xiao Gin hit a slow rolling bunt up the third-base line to score Burden as Gin is ruled safe at first and Nunes advanced to second. Mariah Mazon reached on a fielder's choice as Gin was ruled out at second to keep runner on the corners. OSU left both Nunes and Mazon stranded while holding a 2-0 lead after three.
OSU would strike again in the bottom of the fifth beginning with Nunes hitting a double into center field. Gin followed with a single into right to advance Nunes to third. Mazon smoked a single to Nevada's second baseman scoring Nunes to give OSU a 3-0 lead with one out.
Senior Karla Calderon pinch ran for Mazon as Grace Messmer finds the gap in left center and hits it off the wall. Gin scored on the hit and Calderon made it around to score off a bad throw from the outfield as Messmer moved to second. Izzy Owen advanced Messmer to third but she was ruled out at first. Morgan Allen was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners with two outs. Messmer slid into home on a passed ball to give OSU a 6-0 lead after five.
The Wolfpack tried to come back in the top of the sixth when they got two on, but Mazon went to work in the circle and struck out the final batter looking to keep Nevada off the board.
In the bottom of the inning, Burden led-off with a single through the left side. Nunes followed with a single into right center to put two-on for Mazon to hit her third bomb of the season over the left-field fence to walk it off, 9-0.
Mazon pitched 6.0 innings with four strikeouts to improve to 8-5 on the season and pick up her fourth-solo shutout on the year.
Vs. Seattle U
In the first game of the day, graduate Trystan Melancon started in the circle for the Beavers and picked up two strikeouts in the first inning.
Come the second, Melancon gave up a solo-home run as the sky opened up with heavy down pour. Melancon picked up two-more strikeouts to end the inning, but SU maintained a 1-0 lead after two.
The Beavers attempted to make a comeback in the top of the third with Ashton Phillips bunting her way onto base and Xiao Gin singling into left field to put runners on first and second. OSU ended the top half of the inning leaving them both stranded.
OSU made some defensive changes in the bottom half of the inning bringing Gin in to pitch. After a couple of singles, the bases were loaded and a triple into left field brought in all runners on base. The Redhawks led 4-0 after three.
In the fourth, the Beaver made another pitching change bring senior Nerissa Eason into the circle for the first time this season. Eason struck out two batters in the fourth to keep SU off the board.
The bottom of the fifth brought multiple errors for the Beavers that led to two more runs scoring for the Redhawks.
OSU put up the first and only run of the game in the top of the seventh off a solo-home run by freshman Grace Messmer. It was her first in the Orange and Black.
Melancon suffered the loss for the Beavers to fall to 5-2 on the season as the Beavers lost, 6-1, to the Redhawks. She struck out four total batters and Eason picked up two of her own.
Up Next
The Beavers return to action on Thursday for the final tournament weekend before beginning Pac-12 play. OSU will travel to Tempe, Ariz. for the ASU Invitational to face Wright State, Nebraska, Ohio State and New Mexico State.
