Beavers Fall to Aggies on Day Three
March 07, 2020 | Softball
Tempe, Ariz. – Oregon State softball (16-9) pushed for a comeback but fell short to New Mexico State, 4-2, on the third day of the ASU Invitational at Farrington Stadium.
The Beavers outhit the Aggies, 7-4, and didn't have any errors on the day.
NMSU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a solo-home run in the top of the first inning. It looked like OSU was going to bounce back in the first after junior Missy Nunes hit a single down the left-field line but the Beavers left her stranded in the first.
In the fourth, the Aggies were able to push further ahead with a leadoff walk, a single and a batter getting hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases with no outs. Another walk brought in the second run of the game. Another run crossed home as the Beavers went to first for the out. The final run of the inning crossed on a single hit into left field as OSU made a pitching change from Mariah Mazon to Trystan Melancon. Melancon picked up the final out of the inning striking the batter out looking.
The Beavers came alive in the bottom half of the inning that began with Mazon hitting a single into center field. Redshirt freshman Bailey McLaughlin followed with a double into left center that advanced Mazon to third. Karla Calderon came in to pinch run for McLaughlin as Grace Messmer recorded a sac fly to score Mazon and put OSU on the board. Junior Morgan Allen made contact with the ball and hit it back to the shortstop. Allen was ruled out at first but picked up a RBI as Calderon crossed home. Beavers trailed 4-2 after the fourth.
OSU tried to keep the bats hot in the fifth and sixth innings with Ashton Phillips hitting a double into left field in the fifth and Messmer doubling down the left line in the sixth, but the Beavers left both stranded.
In one-final rally attempt in the seventh inning, Phillips singled into right center but nothing got going behind her as the Beavers fell, 4-2, to the Aggies.
Mazon started in the circle for the Beavers and picked up five strikeouts in 3.2 innings before being replaced by Melancon. Melancon pitched 3.1 innings and struck out six batters, five of them looking.
