April 16, 2021 | Softball
LOS ANGELES - The Oregon State softball team opened its three-game series with a loss, 7-0, to No. 2 UCLA, Friday evening.Â
Â
The Beavers started strong, getting three batters on base in the first inning. After junior Missy Nunes was hit by a pitch, junior Mariah Mazon reached first from a fielder's choice and sophomore Frankie Hammoude drew a walk for three straight batters on base. The Bruins were able to hold off OSU and leave two stranded.
Â
UCLA earned the first hit with their leadoff batter but the Beavers halted their runners with a double play, from Mazon, Hammoude, and sophomore Maia Rader, to close the first inning.Â
Â
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.Â
Â
Freshman Xiao Gin drew a second walk for Oregon State but UCLA notched three outs before she could cross home plate.
Â
Hammoude drew a third walk for the team, second for herself, to get on base in the top of the seventh inning but the Beavers were unable to take advantage of having a runner on base.
Â
The Bruins took game one, 7-0, after scoring a second run in the third and five in the sixth inning.
Â
Mazon and senior pitcher Nerissa Eason combined for four strikeouts in six innings pitched.Â
