Oregon State Drops Game One to No. 6 Washington
April 09, 2021 | Softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State softball team fell, 2-0, to No. 6 Washington to open their Dam Cancer series, Friday night.
Â
The Beaver defense came to play against the Huskies. In each inning, OSU tallied at least one strikeout or a double play. Junior pitcher Mariah Mazon saw two innings with three strikeouts before the field combined for a double play in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Â
Mazon opened the game with a strikeout but a dropped third strike put the Huskies' leadoff batter on base. Before Mazon could finish the top of the first with three more strikeouts, Washington was able to notch a double for the first score.
Â
Continuing her outstanding play, Mazon hit for the Beavers' first single in the bottom but was unable to score as the Huskies grabbed the third out.
Â
With one single to left field, Washington put four batters up in the top of the second. Mazon added two strikeouts to her night total to close the inning.Â
Â
The middle innings remained relatively uneventful.Â
Â
Mazon, and the defense, tallied two 1-2-3 innings in the third and the fourth before sophomore Frankie Hammoude added the Beavers' second and final single of the night in the bottom of the fourth.
Â
Mazon delivered in the fifth with three strikeouts.Â
Â
In catching a line drive and tagging the runner, Hammoude brought an end to the top of the sixth but not before the Huskies added a second run to their lead.
Â
Closing the final inning in the field, junior Missy Nunes caught a fly ball to right field and jetted the ball to third for the double play with freshman Grace Messmer.Â
Â
Mazon totaled 11 strikeouts in addition to the Beavers' two double plays in game one of OSU's four-game series against Washington. Both of the Huskies' runs were unearned.
Â
Oregon State will return to action for a doubleheader against Washington tomorrow at 1 p.m.
