Throwers Excel on Day Two of OSU High Performance
April 29, 2023 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Throwers Keely McLaughlin and Ella Knott provided the highlights for Oregon State on day two of the Oregon State High Performance Meet.
Â
McLaughlin broke her own school record in the shot put in her final home meet, providing the moment of the day on Saturday. The senior finished first in the event as well with a throw of 15.38m/50-05.50. She originally set the record of 50-4.75 in 2019 and held the record for nearly her entire time as a Beav.
Â
Ella Knott reached new heights too, bumping herself all the way up to the no. 3 spot on the OSU Top 10 in the javelin with a throw of 50.25m/164-10.00. Knott's mark would have ranked among the top-40 in the nation entering the day. It surpassed her previous personal best by over 10 feet.
Â
"From a meet management perspective, this was the best outdoor meet in the Northwest this season. It takes a lot of people to help make this go, from officials, volunteers, timing company to OSU Athletics for helping us put on such a great show. And, what a show it was," Oregon State head coach Louie Quintana said. "The sunshine was blazing and the facility looks absolutely amazing. Our incredible donors and supporters have really helped our program elevate. Our team had a fantastic weekend as we start prepping to solidify our roster for Pac-12."
Â
"We showed a balanced attack. Terrific efforts in the throws by Jade in the discus, Markayla in the hammer, Keely and Taylor in the shot put and Ella throwing a bomb in the javelin. We showed great competitiveness in the hurdles. Adael had a brilliant double and it was so good to see Weidinger run 60-point in the 400 hurdles," Quintana continued. "Anneke and Delaney are proving to be consistent horizontal jumpers for us, and Emma had a clean sheet to 1.70 in the high jump. That's big for conference and we know the big jump is there. Distance had a great weekend too. Kaylee and Grace ran 2 of the top 5 marks in the NCAA in the steeple. "I love where we are at competitively heading into the championships."
Â
On the track, Adael Scatena ran a 13.97 in the 100-meter hurdles to move up two spots in the OSU Top 10 to no. 5. She thoroughly outpaced the field, winning the event by .34 seconds.
Â
Jillian Brown also earned a top-10 mark, now sitting at no. 9 all-time with a 2:10.47 in the 800 meters. Paige Sefried and Ava McKee (2:19.65) each picked up a personal bests as well.
Â
Nearing the end of the day, sophomore Jada Hurley placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.10. Freshman Ava Gross recorded a personal best of 12.71 in the same race.
Â
The sprinters led into an excellent finish to the meet for Oregon State. The OSU 4x400 meter relay 'A' team of Scantena, Sefried, Hurley, and Taylor Weidinger finished first while setting a new Whyte Center record with a time of 3:46.21.
Â
