Asics Invitational Opens Home Slate
August 30, 2023 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Following the first win of the Lindsey Behonick era, Oregon State will return home for their 2023 Gill Coliseum debut in the annual Asics Invitational this upcoming weekend. Undefeated opposition in Oklahoma (3-0) and Boise State (2-0) will await the Beavers.
Â
The first serve of the weekend is set for 3 p.m. on Friday when the Beavers (1-2) and Sooners meet for the seventh time in history. Action will wrap when Oregon State and Boise State meet at 11 a.m. on Sunday, which will mark the 12th time the Beavs and Broncos will square off.
FIRST WIN
OSU swept North Dakota (25-18, 25-14, 25-14) for the first win of the season and it marked the first for Behonick as a head coach. Amanda Burns was a kill shy of a double-double (19 assists, nine kills) while Mychael Vernon led with 10 kills and Ryan White contributed 12 digs.
Â
THE OPPOSITION
Oregon State will welcome Oklahoma and Boise State to Gill Coliseum. The Beavs and Sooners will meet for the seventh time and third time since 2019. OU has taken the last three meetings. Boise State snapped the Beavs' 10-match win streak in the series back in 2021 with a sweep in Boise.
Â
SHE'S KILLING IT
Mychael Vernon has totaled 41 kills through the season in the three matches played. In the five sets against Montana State, she tallied 16. In the opener, she added 13 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Â
OH YEAH, WEÂ DIG THAT
Even though it's early, White's 41 digs rank third and her 3.42 D/S is ninth in the Pac-12. The Richland, Wash., product led the Beavs with 361, which was the eighth-most by a sophomore in program history.
Â
INTERNATIONALÂ BEAVS
Oregon State is one of 10 schools in the Pac-12 to have at least one international student-athlete and one of just four (OSU, Arizona, Utah and Washington State) to have at least three. Doga Diraz, an Ankara, Turkey, native, is also the newest to arrive in Corvallis.
Â
MYCHAEL AND JAMAICA ARE GOLD
In late July, Vernon led her national team to the CAZOVA (Caribbean Zonal Volleyball Association) Championship. She was honored as the tournament's MVP, best receiver and outside hitter. With Mychael's play, Jamaica ran the table to the championship with an unbeaten record and completed the competition with a thrilling, five-set win over Trinidad and Tobago.
Â
FROM ATLANTIC TO PACIFIC
A pair of transfers in Ava Pitchford (Florida State) and Peyton Suess (Wake Forest), join Coach Behonick (Pitt) in making the trek west to Corvallis (and the Pac-12) from their former respective ACC campuses.
