STILLWATER, Okla. – The 16th-ranked Oregon State wrestling team fell in a road ranked battle to No. 4 Oklahoma State on Sunday by a 27-9 score.
Four of the day's 10 bouts needed extra time, and two others were decided by two or fewer points. With the setback, Oregon State saw its record drop to 5-3.
Opening things up, 16th-ranked Brandon Kaylor (125) jumped out to an early lead over 19th-ranked Troy Spratley with a takedown and a three point near fall on the way to a win by pin at 4:47. When Spratley closed a 6-1 lead down to just 6-5, Kaylor got the necessary takedown and more to secure the win with just 13 seconds left in the second frame to make it 9-5.
In the 141-pound bout, No. 23 Cleveland Belton held on late to upset seventh-ranked Tagen Jamison by decision at 4-3. Despite conceding a late stalling penalty with 23 ticks left in the battle, Belton out-maneuvered Jamison to for the win despite the challenge.
A late takedown of No. 4 Trey Munoz by second-ranked Dustin Plott in the third period spurned an upset bid in the day's only bout between returning All-Americans as Plott took it by decision at 4-3.
Nash Singleton (149), Matthew Olguin (174), Justin Rademacher (197) and Boone McDermott (HWT) all battled to sudden-victory defeats. Rademacher battled back from an early 4-2 deficit to 16th-ranked Luke Surber in the third to send it to the bonus frame tied at 6-6.
Pac-12 play will resume in Oregon State's next time out when they will face Little Rock in Hillsboro, Ore. In a showcase match at the Reser's Tournament of Champions. The first bout is slated for 6 p.m. on Friday, January 26th.
