Beavers Victorious at Head of the Spokane
October 20, 2024 | Women's Rowing
SPOKANE, Wash. – A set of wins in the varsity eight and varsity pair headlined a fantastic day on the Spokane River for Oregon State women's rowing, who faced Washington State, Portland and hosts Gonzaga in the 2024 Head of the Spokane Regatta on Saturday.
OSU kicked off the day with a win in the women's collegiate eight by the first varsity eight. Working back from a two second deficit at Boulder Beach, sophomore stroke seat Lauren Garrett was able to lead the crew to a two second lead over second place Gonzaga.
Junior coxswain Grace Sansoterra steered the Beavs' second varsity eight to a fourth-place finish overall and first place among second varsity eights. Sansoterra's crew completed the 4,700 meter (2.92 mile) course just two seconds behind Washington State's first varsity eight in third place and 21 seconds ahead of the next fastest second varsity eight.
OSU's third varsity eight finished 10th overall and third among third varsity eight crews while the open four placed second.
The Beavs 3V/4V 8+ finished second in the women's collegiate eight flight two.
Oregon State rounded off the morning with a commanding one-two finish in the women's collegiate pair. OSU A (Lauren Garrett and Annelise Norkitis) crossed the line first with OSU B (Linda Weitmann and Reese Wyatt) coming in second overall. OSU's top pairs had a heated battle with the two boats showing only one second of separation at both the Argonne bridge and Boulder Beach.
The two boats finished 27 and seven seconds ahead of third place Gonzaga respectively.
The Beavs rounded out the top ten pairs with OSU C (Charlotte Lightfoot and Sasha Delman) finishing sixth and OSU I (Anna Bledsoe and Taylor Jones) finishing 10th. All Beaver pairs finished in the top 20 with OSU D in a tie for 12th, OSU F in 15th, OSU E in 17th, OSU G in 19th and OSU H 20th.
Head of the Spokane is the first of three events for the Beavers this fall. Up next, OSU heads to Gold River, Calif. on Oct. 26 for the Head of the American. The Beavs will conclude their fall season on the Willamette River at the Orange and Black Regatta Nov. 9.
