Tobias Scores in Home Draw Against No. 20 Pepperdine
October 26, 2024 | Women's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Valerie Tobias scored her third goal of the season as Oregon State women's soccer (6-7-2, 4-1-2 WCC) played the 20th-ranked Pepperdine Waves to a 1-1 draw at Paul Lorenz Field.
Saturday's draw marked the first time that OSU has earned points against a ranked opponent since defeating the No. 7 Stanford Cardinal on Sept. 30, 2021, and puts the team in a three-way tie for first place in the WCC; the Beavers sit alongside Pepperdine and No. 10 Santa Clara with three games to go in the regular season.
Tobias' goal came in the 35th minute, pulling her shot from the top of the box to the 'keeper's left and putting the Beavs ahead early. For the Fillmore, Calif., native, Saturday's goal was the latest big moment a run of fantastic form, scoring two goals and adding two assists in her last four appearances.
She sits in second on the team in total points with nine thanks to a total of three goals and three assists, both of which are career highs for a single season.
Assists on the go-ahead goal came from Carly Carraher and Claire Jones. Carraher's helper was her first in 2024 while Jones moved into a tie for second on the team with three this season; Jones is one of four different Beavers with three or more in 2024.
Cassi James made her sixth appearance of the season off the bench while Ari Hill entered in the 85th minute, marking her first appearance since Sept. 8 against Seattle U.
The Beaver defense stepped up big, holding the Waves to just three shots on target, which is tied for the lowest mark this season as Mya Sanchez made two saves; the visitors' goal came on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute.
Tobias and the Beavers are back in action next Saturday, hosting No. 10 Santa Clara. Kickoff at Paul Lorenz Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. after a brief pregame ceremony to recognize the Beaver seniors.
